Senator Casey Pushes for More Computer Science Education
The U.S. Senate soon could take up a bill to push states and schools to make computer science courses part of their core curricula. The bill that Sen. Bob Casey Jr., D-Scranton, introduced would offer competitive grants to states and schools to beef up their high school computer science offerings. More than 140,000 computer science jobs become available each year, but fewer than 40,000 people graduate each year with bachelor’s degrees in the subject, according to the Joint Economic Committee, a House-Senate committee. On Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at 12 noon, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will host a webcast featuring Amy Bruckman of Georgia Tech and Leah Buechley of MIT, who are at the forefront of teaching information technologies to the next generation of computer scientists, any one of whom may be the next Bill Gates ... or even computer science pioneer Grace Hopper, whose birthday on Dec. 9, 1906, is recognized in the timing of this event. Rear Admiral Hopper, or “Amazing Grace,” is credited with leading the development of the first modern computer language, COBOL, and popularizing the term “debugging.” Read more ...

My alma mater, Vassar College, has graduated some remarkable individuals. Notable Vassar alumni include poets Edna St. Vincent Millay (1917) and Elizabeth Bishop (1934), actress Meryl Streep (1971), musician Mark Ronson, journalist Evan Wright (1988), writer-director Noah Baumbach (1991) and Flickr founder Caterina Fake (1991). The alum that has most inspired me, however, was a female trailblazer in a field that is still dominated by men. Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper was born in 1906 and graduated from Vassar in 1930. She was a pioneer in the computer science field and her work led to the development of modern programming language. Read more ...
